While the following cannot be considered exhaustive, nor representative of every phase of development during the more than sixty years of the Smaragdum Thalasses Temple No 49, it is nevertheless representative of what a student of Whare Ra would typically receive during their passage through the Outer Order—a process which, if pursued by a diligent student, extended over approximately three years.
The core papers of the curriculum, such as the Knowledge Lectures, together with technical papers on Astrology, Tarot, the Altar Diagrams, Geomancy, Qlippoth, Schemahamphorasch and Lineal Figures would have been familiar to members of the Isis Urania Temple No. 3, of which Dr. Felkin himself was a member.
Other material was developed by the Stella Matutina Chiefs over time, such as some of the material in the A, B, C and related series of side lectures, the series of Grade Meditations and the Daily Rhythms. These additions were not speculative innovations meant to bolster content, but arose organically from decades of practical experience in working the system and training students.
The Allocutions for each Grade date from the period of early collaboration with A. E. Waite, immediately following the collapse of the Golden Dawn.
In addition to this more formal instruction, many other addresses and papers by Dr. and Mrs Felkin, and by other Chiefs, were issued more informally to members, depending on the student’s line of enquiry, temperament, and stage of development. It is possible that some of these papers were written for a specific student, but were deemed suitable or adapted for wider circulation.
Direct personal instruction was also given. As part of the Practicus work, for instance, members were to “Receive from the Chief instruction in The Lesser Ritual of the Pentagram” when they were ready.
Meditation notes were taken by members, and sent to the Demonstrator regularly. These were useful, amongst other things, in helping that Officer determine which of the many supplementary papers were appropriate to issue at a given time, or to help deem when Advancement was appropriate.
And at all times, the emphasis remained on the training of the student and their progress. The many papers that were issued helped serve this purpose; they never replaced it.
