Each Neophyte is tasked with performing a private ritual known as the “Lesser Ritual of the Pentagram”. In practice it is most often performed prior to and following undertaking the relevant Grade Meditation, but officially it is performed in the morning and again in the evening.
The Neophyte is to “take any convenient steel pointed instrument” to use, and this generally meant a suitably shaped knife or dagger. As a ritual tool that will be used for life, some time is often needed to make or procure a suitable dagger i.e. small, pointed, and made of iron. Frank Salt suggested I use a large nail, say 15cm or 6 inches or so in length, in the meantime.
Cheap and easily acquired, the humble nail is able to fill this temporary role admirably.
