I remember my first Initiation vividly.
I had just travelled the length of the country to meet a man I had never meet before, but only written to. I was to come to his door and knock, to let him know I had arrived, and then to wait. I was on edge, and I was sensitive to all sounds and movement as I waited, and it seemed an extraordinary long time before the door finally opened.
Afterwards, it all seemed a blur. My mind was racing all over the place as one symbol, then a speech, then a movement lured my attention, jumping from one to the other. There was no small talk. Fiat Lux gave me a bundle of bound documents, he explained briefly the types of papers I had received, and then he said – “head straight back to your place, try and avoid small talk and chit chat if you can, and quietly read through this lot, the copy of the Ceremony particularly. Try and soak in this atmosphere as you do so”.
And that was that. Down to the bus stop I went, opening the first document under the street light as I pondered what had just occurred. My mind still on heaven, as my feet lightly touched the Earth.
Fiat Lux, who had been Demonstrator at Whare Ra for many years, was firm in his view that this was the practice to be followed. And so this pattern continued for my subsequent Advancements. No socialising afterwards. No fraternising. Just quiet pondering on my own. Still in the delightful haze of having participated in a sacred drama. In a post ceremonial bliss.
These moments are rare, so take full advantage of them and do not debase them. Before too long, you must stand once again, feet firmly on Earth.
