Whare Ra Leadership – Part Four

The Wardens would sometimes appoint a Sub-Warden to assist them, remaining in tenure while the Warden was in Office.

This was particularly so for the Demonstrator, given the workload of training and assisting a relatively large number of active members.  For instance Betty Jones, who was later to become a Chief of the O., was Sub-Demonstrator under Frank Salt for a time.

In addition to the Sub-Demonstrator, a Sub-Warden of the Imperator, the “Mistress of the Robes”, was regularly in Office.  Her role was to make sure that the Robes of the Officers were ready for each Ceremony, and kept clean and tidy when not in use.  She stood to the right of the Dias during the Installation of the Officers at the Equinox, assisting the new Officers in fitting their Nemis and Cloaks.

Strictly not a Sub-Warden given the responsibility for Second Order MSS, another Officer the “Keeper of the Scrolls” was responsible for maintaining the O.’s many manuscripts in good order.  Frank Salt held this Office for a time, taking over from Miss Felkin (see the accompanying image to this post).  This Office was likely a devolution of Felkin’s Office of Recorder, ranking as a Chief, and as set out in the Constitution of the Stella Matutina in 1916.  R.A. Gilbert has the full text of this Constitution with the duties of the Recorder in his “The Golden Dawn Companion”.

The Hierophant and Chief Adept rounded out the leadership roles at Whare Ra, albeit their focus being on the performance of Ceremonial and organising their Officers to ensure availability and the conducting of rehearsals.
